Innovations to Translation: Journey from dreams into reality

In this presentation, the author presents a detailed overview of the
progress in India with respect to the public health care system.
In this regard, the central role of scientific agencies, public administration
systems and their subsequent integration to efficiently tackle
various competent issues in healthcare systems has been deliberated.
Eventually, various road blocks for translating innovations to
practical applications in medical science have been addressed.
These include mindset of the user community, regulators and peer
groups, availability of funds, quality human resource, infrastructure
for development, evaluation and infrastructure for the usage of
new technology or tools and commitment of innovators, industry and
others. All these are indicative that science alone cannot foster
towards translating innovations into reality and the
coherence of other systems to support scientific advances is necessary.
Finally, as a concluding remark, furthering in this path is suggested
through active debate to create and sustain a healthy and productive
Born in 1953, Dr. V.M. Katoch is the secretary to the Government
of India, Department of Health Research and Director General, Indian Council of
Medical Research (ICMR). Previously, he was the Director of National JALMA Institute of
Leprosy and other Mycobacterial diseases (ICMR, Agra). Dr. Katoch
has a research experience of around 33 years. He has over 225 publications in various
prestigious journals. His field of research includes Microbiology, Leprosy and Genetics.
Dr. Katoch is honored with the fellowships of National Academy of Science
(FNASc), National Academy of Medical Sciences (FNAMS), Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore
and Indian National Science Academy (FNA). He is a recipient of various awards like Ranbaxy
Science Foundation Award 2003 for Medical Research, Dr.CGS Iyer Oration Award (ICMR), 1990,
Sher-I-Kashmir Sheikh Mohd. Abdulla Memorial Oration Award, 1989 and IAMM Endowment Award
